The Department of Communication, in partnership with Continuing Education, is launching a new Professional Certificate in Conflict/Dispute Resolution and Mediation, a one-semester program that fulfills the approved training requirements for the Utah Court Roster of Mediators (Basic Roster). This exciting opportunity comes thanks to the dedicated work of Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies Michael Middleton, whose leadership and persistence were essential in bringing the program to life.

Conflict is a constant part of personal, professional, and community life. This certificate equips participants with the tools to navigate those moments more effectively through a blend of mediation theory, hands-on practice, and practical strategies. Students will learn to resolve disputes, foster productive dialogue, and transform moments of tension into opportunities for understanding and collaboration. The program is ideal for professionals, students, and community members who want to strengthen their conflict management skills or pursue work in mediation.

Instructor Amy Draper says it best,

“This course helps participants shift conflict from something daunting into something that they can approach with confidence, clarity, and purpose.”

The course begins January 5 and meets on Tuesday evenings throughout the semester. The cost is $1,600. While the program is not eligible for faculty/staff tuition reduction or emeritus benefits, staff members are encouraged to apply for one of the two remaining $800 professional development scholarships available through Staff Council.
