Telling Religion’s Stories Across Media Platforms

This interdisciplinary certificate offers students a unique blend of journalism and religious studies, preparing them to report thoughtfully and accurately on religious issues in a complex global landscape. Students will develop core skills in news writing, digital storytelling, and media ethics and law, equipping them to craft compelling narratives across multiple platforms while adhering to professional standards.

Simultaneously, students will explore religions around the world, gaining a broad understanding of diverse belief systems and practices. Through disciplinary approaches to studying religion, they will learn to analyze religious phenomena critically and contextually. This certificate is ideal for those interested in careers in journalism, media, nonprofit work, or any field where informed, ethical communication about religion is essential.

Program Coordinator

Requirements

The certificate in Religion, Media, and Journalism will consist of 7 courses, 22-23 credit hours. 4 of the 7 courses will come from the Department of Communication (COMM), two will come from Religious Studies (RELS), and one will come from an interdisciplinary list of electives that already exists (and previously approved) within the Religious Studies Major:

Foundational Courses

Complete all of the following courses:

Learning Requirements

By completing the Religion, Media, and Journalism Certificate, students will:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in news writing and digital storytelling techniques to effectively communicate complex religious topics to diverse audiences.
  • Apply ethical principles and legal frameworks in media production to ensure responsible and accurate reporting on religion.
  • Analyze and interpret religious beliefs, practices, and institutions from multiple disciplinary perspectives to enhance contextual understanding in journalistic work.
  • Critically evaluate the role of religion in global societies and its impact on current events and cultural narratives.
