John R. Park Debate Society Among Nation's Top 20 Programs

Individual Student Places First In The Nation

The Debate Society recently competed at the National Parliamentary Debate Association National Championship Tournament held at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA on March 22-25, 2013. The U enjoyed competitive success not seen in over a decade, finishing 13th, edging out PAC-12 competitors UCLA, Univ. of Washington, and CU-Boulder. This is the teams best finish since 2003 when it placed 17th. In the yearlong competition, the U finished 51st out of more than 150 schools competing. This is a gain of 76 ranks since 2009 when the U's program was revitalized under the direction of Michael K. Middleton.

In individual competition Jesus Munoz earned the Dan Henning Award, which is given to the top 1st year competitor in the nation. This is the first time the U has won this first place award at nationals. Rebecca Isbell and Nicholas Jensen advanced to triple octofinals at the national tournament.

Congratulations!
