In Memoriam: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Tom Wharton

The Department of Communication mourns the passing of esteemed alumnus Tom Wharton, who died on May 8, 2025, at the age of 74. A distinguished journalist, devoted mentor, and generous benefactor, Tom's contributions have left an indelible mark on our community and the field of journalism.

 

A Storied Career in Journalism

Tom's journalism journey began in 1967 as a student at Granite High School, where he served as editor of the student newspaper. His talent was recognized early when he won a Tribune-sponsored writing contest, earning the opportunity to cover the state high school basketball tournament. This experience ignited a passion that led to a remarkable 45-year career at The Salt Lake Tribune, where he reported on sports and the outdoors from 1970 until his retirement in 2016.

Known for his deep knowledge of Utah's landscapes and communities, Tom was celebrated for his engaging storytelling and commitment to covering high school sports. His annual coverage of at least one prep sports game spanned over five decades, a testament to his dedication. Beyond journalism, Tom served in the Utah National Guard's public affairs unit for 21 years, with deployments in South Korea, Germany, and Central America.

 

The Wharton Family Endowed Scholarship: A Lasting Legacy

In 2002, Tom and his late wife, Gayen, established the Wharton Family Endowed Scholarship within our department. Designed to support incoming freshmen with a journalism emphasis, this scholarship has benefited over 20 undergraduate students to date. It continues to foster the development of aspiring journalists, reflecting Tom's enduring commitment to education and mentorship.

Remembering Tom

Tom was more than a journalist; he was a mentor to many and a friend to all. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering support enriched the lives of colleagues, students, and readers alike. His legacy lives on through the stories he told, the lives he touched, and the opportunities he created for future journalists.

We extend our deepest condolences to Tom's family, including his wife Nancy, his children Emma, Jacob, Rawl, and Bryer, his stepchildren, grandchildren, and siblings Derk and Lori.
