Kent A. Ono Named Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association
The Department of Communication is pleased to announce that Kent A. Ono, professor of communication, has been named a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association. Ono is the first representative from the University of Utah to receive the honor. The recognition is given to those who have attained “a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the study of human communication. Recipients are selected to showcase the communication profession.”
“It is a tremendous honor to have been chosen by the National Communication Association as one of its Distinguished Scholars,” said Ono. “I am pleased to represent the University of Utah and the Department of Communication as a member of this august list of exceptional scholars in the communication discipline.”
This is the second communication field-wide career award given to Ono by a professional organization. In 2021, he was inducted as a Fellow of the International Communication Association. In addition to becoming an NCA Distinguished Scholar in 2022, he has also been awarded the 2022 Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Award given out by NCA for “a lifetime of outstanding service to the Association and to the profession. The Award is presented to the person judged to have made the greatest contribution to the association and to the profession during her or his career.”
“These awards reflect the rich contributions Dr. Ono has made across many communication areas,” said Avery Holton, chair of the Department of Communication. “His work represents the kind of sustained efforts and deep engagement communication as a broad field has needed and continues to need as the world faces increased tensions across a number of significant communication platforms.”
Public recognition of Ono’s achievement will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19, at NCA’s 108th Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Congratulations Dr. Ono!
