Cancer Research Study being led by U of U Communication Faculty and Alumnus

Assistant Professor Heather Canary and her team of graduate research assistants coordinated a DVD study funded by the National Cancer Institute. Department of Communication Alumnus, Dr. Wayne Beach of San Diego State University, is the Principal Investigator for the study.

The researchers shared two evenings of information about managing the cancer journey on September 20 and 21, 2013, in the Eccles Auditorium at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. Those interested in learning about how nutrition, exercise, family communication, and other issues relate to the cancer journey attended and participate in the study. Participants were paid $50 each for viewing a video about managing cancer, filling out brief questionnaires before and after the viewing, and participating in a talk-back session after the screening. The videos range from 70 to 80 minutes. Participants also filled out a brief online questionnaire about a month later. The study seeks to understand how people make use of information about cancer and cancer journeys.
