Kevin DeLuca Named Environmental Humanities Research Professor

Associate Professor Kevin DeLuca has been chosen as the Environmental Humanities Research Professor for the academic year 2013-14. According to the research professorship description, "this professorship is intended to honor our most dedicated faculty and enable them to deepen our understanding of environmental humanities." With the support provided by the EH research professorship, DeLuca will complete his book manuscript entitled Creating Wilderness: Imaging Environmentalism’s Sublime Object, the first book-length study of the political and cultural role of images in the U.S. environmental movement. With this study he will examine landscape photography, paintings, and video to support the claim that such images have constructed a vision of sublime wilderness that—more so than verbal rhetoric and organizational forms—has propelled the environmental movement in the U.S. since 1861 to the present day.
