Professor Rachel Griffin to be honored with National Communication Presidential Citation for Service

Dr. Griffin will be honored at the 107th NCA Convention November 18th-21st

At the National Communication Association (NCA) convention (November 18th-November 21st, 2021) in Seattle, WA, Dr. Rachel Alicia Griffin will be honored with a NCA Presidential Citation for her 2019-2021 term as Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Council Chair. Due to the intensive labor of council members and the indispensable support of the Executive Committee, Dr. Griffin successfully:

  • Increased the Student Travel Grant funding from $30K to $90K to enhance the financial support available to students affiliated with NCA’s caucuses for convention travel – many of whom identify with historically disenfranchised communities.
  • Positioned the IDEA Council to work alongside the Publications Council to identify and eradicate the structural barriers impeding diversity and inclusion among NCA’s journal editors.
  • Positioned the IDEA Council to work alongside the Executive Committee to address the disciplinary fallout surrounding the structural exclusionary practices of NCA’s Distinguished Scholars Award and to develop best practices for prioritizing inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in all awards processes.
  • Facilitated the Inaugural year of NCA’s IDEA Scholarship, IDEA Engagement, and Shawn D. Long IDEA Program awards.
  • Called for the development of an NCA IDEA Strategic Plan and currently co-chairs the NCA IDEA Strategic Planning Taskforce.
  • Annually programmed 3 IDEA Spotlight panels at each NCA convention.

Congratulations Dr. Griffin!
