John R. Park Debate Society: More Than Just Debate – A Community of Growth

Park Debate Society, but we’re about more than just debate,” say Dr. Jeannie Hunt, Director of Forensics, and Averie Vockel, Assistant Director of Forensics and Public Outreach Manager. The Debate Society is an intercollegiate team that competes in eight to ten tournaments each year, going head-to-head with colleges and universities across the country that share the same dedication to learning, passion for growth, and commitment to excellence.

The team engages in three distinct types of debate. In two of these formats, competitors are given their topics just 20 minutes before the round begins, usually revolving around current events or philosophical questions. The third type of debate is centered on a single resolution throughout the year, with this year’s focus on AI in law enforcement and privacy. In addition to these debates, the team also participates in "forensics," which involves 11 different public speaking events that foster the development of students' communication and presentation skills.

As the oldest student organization on campus, the John R. Park Debate Society has deep roots in its community, and part of its outreach efforts include staying connected with alumni. Social media plays a key role in sharing the team’s achievements, allowing former members to follow the current team’s success and see that the legacy they helped build is still thriving.

When asked what they want people to know about the Debate Society, Dr. Hunt and Averie Vockel say, “We want everyone to have the message that debate is a good and well-rounded student experience. It's not just competition, it's also outreach. If you're on the team, you're going to have opportunities for scholarships, internships, and travel to places you've never been before. It’s a one-stop opportunity for a wealth of experiences that would normally require reaching out to many different places and people.”

"It's not just competition, it's also outreach... It’s a one-stop opportunity for a wealth of experiences that would normally require reaching out to many different places and people."

The Debate Society is currently collaborating with the American Council for Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) and its initiative, “Break Angels Debate.” This partnership brings public discourse-focused events to universities and colleges nationwide. “This event will be a little different because people who come will be able to speak and engage in the debate—so it's not just watching, they'll be able to be part of it, if they want to. Even those who might not think debate is for them are often surprised by how entertaining and interactive the experience can be.”

Additionally, the Debate Society has partnered with MorningSide Elementary, working specifically with fourth and fifth graders. “The students are learning debate as part of their curriculum, and we’re helping them develop their skills,” Dr. Hunt explains. The team visits the school regularly to teach the basics of debate and presentation, equipping the next generation with skills that will serve them in both academic and personal pursuits.

In essence, the John R. Park Debate Society is more than just a team—it's a community that fosters growth, learning, and the development of invaluable skills that extend far beyond the realm of debate. Through their rigorous competitions, partnerships with national organizations, and local outreach efforts, they create opportunities for personal and professional growth that enrich students’ lives. As they continue to shape the future of public discourse, the Debate Society remains a shining example of how one organization can have a lasting impact both on campus and beyond.
