Kent Ono Spoke at Annual UNLV Lecture Series

kent onoDepartment Chair Kent Ono presented a talk at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for its annual lecture series on April 21.

He presented on his recent work The Posthuman, New Materialism, and the Gendered/Racial Future in Advantageous. Jennifer Phang's film, Advantageous, is a futuristic science fiction fantasy set sometime in the near future. As a feminist dystopic narrative, it reveals the ever more technological future as dangerous for women and girls. The central character in the film makes the desperate decision to transfer her memory and consciousness into a younger host woman's body in order to keep her job. As does much scholarship on post humanism, the film ultimately suggests technological advancements may deepen and intensify, rather improve, existing problems for women. The film offers a feminist critique by taking contemporary logics relating to women, girls, technological progress, childbearing, and child rearing to absurd extremes and highlights the particular and disconcerting role Asian American women might play in the post humanist future.
