Kevin Coe Receives Outstanding Article Award
Assistant Professor Kevin Coe, along with his coauthor Anthony Schmidt (a graduate student who studied with Professor Coe at the University of Arizona), has been awarded the 2013 Michael Pfau Outstanding Article Award. The award is given annually by the Political Communication Division of the National Communication Association. Coe and Schmidt received the award for an article they published in Journal of Communication in 2012, entitled "America in Black and White: Locating Race in the Modern Presidency, 1933-2011." The article tracks communication about race in presidential speeches across eight decades, finding that presidents often avoid talking about race and that Southern Democrats tend to discuss race differently than do other presidents. This is the second time Professor Coe has received this award; the first was in 2008.
