Dr. Curtis Newbold, Clinical Associate Professor in Strategic Communication and Faculty Advisor for PRSSA, shares insights into the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and its vital role within the Department of Communication. “PRSSA offers students opportunities to see what’s possible, connect with professionals, get a sense for what they want to do, and even what they don't want to do. It’s a helpful and valuable experience in that way,” he explains.

PRSSA is a national organization with a local chapter within the Department of Communication.  The chapter is led by a team of student leaders, including a president, vice president, event coordinator, and secretary. Dr. Newbold serves as an advisor, organizing and managing various events for communication students, such as panel discussions, guest speakers, site visits, and more.

When asked about his goals for PRSSA and what he hopes students will gain from their involvement, Dr. Newbold says, “It's fun to see the direct connection between students’ work in PRSSA and where they hope to go with their career. Often, there’s a bit of a disconnect between what students do in the classroom and what they hope to do for a career. PRSSA hopes to provide students with a lot more practical, client-based experiences and networking opportunities.”

"We’ve seen how PRSSA has a positive effect on students as they enter the job market. There’s been a direct correlation between students who participate in PRSSA, and who successfully secure jobs."

PRSSA events allow students to hear from industry professionals, expand their network, and engage in hands-on learning that will shape their future careers. Dr. Newbold emphasizes, “I think that if we could get students more involved in these professional networking opportunities, both now and as they enter the field, that would be a big thing,” Dr. Newbold explains.

He continues, “We’ve seen how PRSSA has a positive effect on students as they enter the job market. There’s been a direct correlation between students who participate in PRSSA, and who successfully secure jobs.” For students eager but nervous about entering the workforce, PRSSA provides a valuable opportunity to meet professionals who have already navigated the path they’re about to take, helping to make the transition smoother and more informed.

A big thank you to Dr. Newbold for his dedication to PRSSA, guiding students and providing them with valuable opportunities to learn and pave the way for a bright and successful future.
